5 Best Beard Butters In 2023

There are thousands of beard butters out there. But there’s a huge difference between the best beard butters and the worst. If you want a thick, shiny, and healthy-looking beard, trust me, you’ve gotta grab a good jar of beard butter. Here are the 5 best this year.

Table of Contents

Cremo Beard & Scruff Cream (Our Top Pick)

Here’s what I love about Cremo. They make some of the best grooming products for the gentleman in you, but with a throwback twist. And their products are so good that the Edgewell Personal Care Company spent $235 million dollars acquiring Cremo.

That’s how great and successful their products are.

What I love about their beard and scruff cream and why it’s one of the best beard butters in 2022 is that it’s one of those lightweight beard butters that won’t weigh your beard down or feel heavy on your face.

It’s also made with some really great ingredients like Aloe Leaf Extract, Cocoa Seed Butter, and Coconut Oil––all some of the best ingredients that keeps your facial hair moisturized and healthy.

And that’s exactly what this beard butter does––keeps your beard moisturized and healthy. But it also soothes beard itch.

And it’s fresh, manly, outdoorsy scent smells awesome.

Pros:

  • Has awesome ingredients like Coconut Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, and Aloe Leaf Extract that leave your beard hydrated––the key to a healthy beard.
  • I love that it can be used on all different beard types––stubble, scruff, and a long beard.
  • The scent is awesome. It’s a manly, fresh, outdoorsy scent that your girl will love.
  • Great to use if you have a long beard and want to style it.

Cons:

  • It has alcohol in the ingredients which isn’t great. Alcohol dries your skin out and I hate that it’s one of the ingredients.
  • The scent is awesome but doesn’t last as long as I’d like.
  • The cream is light. You may need to use a lot to feel like it’s working or taming any flyaway hair.

18.21 Man Made Beard Balm

18.21 Man Made is one of those badass brands that everyone talks about because they’re so damn good. You can find them being praised in places like BUSTLE, Men’s Health, ALLURE, and The Oprah Magazine.

I love that they celebrate the spirit of masculinity. And their beard balm is another one of their products that’s great for the fella in you.

It nourishes your beard with ingredients like Shea Butter, Beeswax, and other Premium Oils, while softening and moisturizing. I love that it also thickens your beard, too. And that’s great for the dudes who struggle with patches in their beards.

Hey, I did, too.

There’s no judgment here.

But I also love that you can use this beard balm no matter the texture of beard you’ve got. It’s great for all different beard types––scruff, stubble, and long beards. And one of my favorite aspects is that you can use it as a “leave-in” conditioner for your beard.

Just slab some onto your beard and go. Before you know it, your beard will be shiny, thick and healthy in no time.

Pros:

  • Smells amazing. It’s a wonderful blend of coconut, and spicy French Vanilla that smells uber masculine, clean, and fresh.
  • The scent lasts long. I love that you can still smell the scent lingering hours after using it.
  • A great option if you have a patchy beard because it thickens and if you use it as a leave-in conditioning, they say it’ll help your beard grow faster.

Cons:

  • The product itself is a little grainy which is annoying. I’m not a fan of the small grains being in my beard after using this.
  • The scent is very strong. If you’re sensitive to scents this may not be the best choice for you.

Honest Amish Beard Balm

Honest Amish is an awesome brand. Honestly. They specialize in all-natural, 100% organic men’s grooming products that never use any kind of man-made chemicals which can damage your beard and skin.

The ingredients Honest Amish uses for this product definitely makes it one of the best beard butters in 2022.

They’ve packed this beard balm with a boatload of essential oils that will repair and strengthen your beard. There’s incredible stuff like Virgin Argan Oil, Avocado Oil, Virgin Pumpkin Seed Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, and Grapeseed Oil.

But there’s also Shea Butter, Aloe Leaf, Golden Jojoba, and Cocoa Butter, too. These butters soften, enhance, shine, and condition your beard.

It doesn’t get any better than that.

Pros:

  • The ingredients are top notch. You cannot beat the amount of all-natural, 100% Organic oils and butters used in this beard balm. Talk about a silky-smooth beard!
  • It relieves itching that comes with new hair growth. I know you hate it as much as I do.
  • A little goes a long way. You don’t need to use a whole lot to get your beard tight and right.

Cons:

  • The scent is super strong. I don’t like that it smells way too much like medicine. I wish it had a much better scent to it.
  • It’s super gritty which can be annoying. The grit makes it feel really weird on your face.

Every Man Jack Beard Butter

They’re one of the most talked about all-natural men’s grooming brands. They’ve been all over Rolling Stone, FORBES, and HuffPost just to name a few. And with Every Man Jack, you can believe the hype.

That’s what their beard butter does for me––hypes me up.

It’s that good.

This beard butter is a plant-based, vegan, all-natural beard butter that is one of the best beard butters this year. It’s teeming with goodness like Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, and Coconut Oil.

Yes, they all smell good, but they’re even better for your skin and to rejuvenate your beard. What I particularly like about this beard butter is that it’s great for anyone with a patchy beard. I know how irritating that is, and this product does an awesome job of stimulating your beard, so it grows.

It’s great for relieving itch and irritation caused by new hair growth, especially under your neck where it’s easy to develop razor bumps. This beard butter is great for helping to fight that.

I’ve loved using this beard butter and trust me, you will too.

Pros:

  • Paraben-free with no harsh chemicals or dyes.
  • I love that it soothes the skin and fights irritation and relieves that annoying itch that comes with new hair growth.
  • Has some of my favorite ingredients like Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, and Coconut Oil.

Cons:

  • The scent is really intense. If you don’t like strong aromas, you won’t like this one.
  • Some people may be allergic to some of the ingredients. It’s important to make sure you read all the ingredients before you try it if you’re someone who has allergic reactions to certain oils.

The Art Of Shaving Beard Balm

There’s definitely an art to having a bomb ass beard, and The Art of Shaving has one of the best beard butters to help you achieve it. They’re a cool high-end brand that’s been creating men’s luxury grooming products since 1996.

Their beard balm is one of my favorites because it’s particularly great for stubble. If you’re one of the dudes who’s always fighting with razor bumps, or that itchy new growth that irritates your neck.

I also love how it conditions and hydrates your facial hair but also the skin underneath. And that’s super important. The skin under your beard can get bumps, acne, and other issues if you’re not taking care of it.

Same thing for your neck.

And that’s why it’s super important you use a beard balm like this one that will soothe and hydrate your skin. Especially when it’s irritated right after shaving.

Pros:

  • Great for hydrating and soothing your skin.
  • Non-greasy. Won’t have your beard looking hard or like you’ve put on too much product.
  • I love how silky your hair feels after using it.

Cons:

  • If you have oily skin and hair, this could be too harsh and dry it out way too much.
  • The scent is way too strong. It smells harsh and chemical-y.

What Is Beard Butter?

Beard butter is an awesome product you use daily to keep your beard moisturized, hydrated, and healthy. They’re great for giving your neck and the skin underneath your beard the nourishment and vitamins it needs to get and stay healthy.

Beard Butters is also a great product that soothes irritated skin. If you have sensitive skin that feels harsh after you shave, a good beard butter will help to soothe.

If you use it in addition to a good facial cleanser and aftershave, you’ll have one of the best-looking beards on the block.

Does Beard Butter Actually Work?

I would say yes. But it all depends on which beard butter you use. Of course, I always recommend using products with all-natural ingredients, and that goes for your beard butter, too.

All-natural products are much better for your skin, much better for replenishing its moisture and hydration, and rejuvenating any damage.

And since your beard is one of the first things people notice when they meet you, it’s uber important that you make sure it’s looking fresh, healthy, and moisturized

The beard butters that I’ve seen work are the ones with essential oils like Argan oil and Olive Oil, and butters like Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter.

Those are the key ingredients you want to be sure your beard butter has if you want it to work.

Should I Use Beard Butter at Night?

I like to use my beard butter in the mornings so that my beard and face feels moisturized throughout the day. But you can definitely use it at night, too.

There’s no harm in using your beard butter to hydrate and condition your beard while you sleep. Especially if you have a facial cleansing night routine.

You can throw your beard butter into the mix and start to see a difference in your beard’s health, in no time.

As long as you’re using a beard butter that doesn’t have harmful chemicals like alcohol or parabens, and silicone, or dyes, you will be fine. It’s also really great because if you have a patchy beard or overly dry skin, using your beard butter at night before bed will let your skin absorb it easier without the harmful chemicals you deal with outside.

Should You Use Beard Oil and Butter Together?

Using beard oil and beard butter together isn’t the best idea. You don’t want to overkill your skin with oils and butters that can end up clogging your pores if you use too much. That can cause acne, blemishes, and other skin issues.

I’m a big fan of beard butter so I’d suggest using that first and if you don’t like the results or want to switch to a different kind of product to see if you like that more than I’m all for it.

Just don’t use them together.

Please.

Is Beard Butter or Balm Better?

Beard Butter and Beard Balm are practically the same thing. They do the same job for you and have the same effect on your beard––-hydrate, keep it healthy, and help it to grow.

They both give your beard (and the skin underneath) the vitamins and minerals it needs to get and stay healthy and to look its best.

Some of them are also super great for stimulating hair growth, which is awesome if you’re one of those dudes with a patchy beard that just doesn’t seem to want to grow.

If you find a product that you love and it says beard butter or beard balm, they are the same thing and I say go for it. Just be sure there are some amazing ingredients in it and that it doesn’t have anything harmful that can damage your skin or dry your beard out.

Is Beard Butter Better Than Beard Oil?

TBH, I like Beard Butter better than Beard Oil. While they both do very similar things, I like the texture and consistency of beard butter. It’s a lot thicker and to me, feels like it’s a lot more moisturizing for my beard.

Beard Oil can leave your beard, and the skin underneath, very oily. They can also leave a greasiness that, I don’t know about you, but for me, doesn’t feel that great.

A good beard butter doesn’t.

The thickness in beard butter makes it last a lot longer, keeping your beard moisturized and healthy for a longer period than beard oil, too.

And because it takes longer to absorb into your beard, if you find a beard butter that smells awesome, you can expect to have the scent linger on your beard longer than beard oil, too.

To me, it’s always a great idea to go with beard butter.

What To Look for In a Beard Butter

As always, it’s super important to look for a product that has all-natural ingredients, or as close to it as possible. The same goes for beard butter.

You want to find one that has butters that are awesome for your skin. Butters like Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter and really great oils like Jojoba Oil, Grapeseed Oil, and Coconut Oil.

Those are all some of the best ingredients that are all-natural and have great moisturizing effects. They’ll keep your beard moisturized, looking sleek, all while taming stray flyaway hairs to give your beard a more defined, cleaner look.

Remember, the more hydrated your beard, the healthier.

I would also make sure that my beard butter doesn’t have any parabens, alcohol, or dyes. They’re not good for your skin and can cause damage in the long run.

Plus, they dry you out excessively and can irritate your skin even more than it may already be.
